History

Michelin is a French tyre manufacturer that was founded in 1889 by brothers André and Édouard Michelin. The company initially started off by producing bicycle tyres but later expanded into making tyres for automobiles, and other vehicles.

In the early 1900s, Michelin began to focus on the development of racing tyres. The company's tyres were used by some of the most successful racing teams of the time, including those that competed in the first-ever Grand Prix race in 1906.

One of the major contributions of Michelin to the tyre industry was the development of the radial tyre in the 1940s. This type of tyre has a stronger sidewall and better traction, which provides better fuel economy and longer tyre life.

During World War I they became a major supplier or tyres for the French Military developing new technologies to improve durability and performance. In the 1920s - 1930s they continued to innovate and improve tyre designs producing new treads to improve handling and grip on wet roads.

Michelin again became major supplier of tyres for the military developing new technologies to deal with difficult conditions. Following the War they continued to innovate and expand their product line to commercial vehicles, aircraft and even space shuttles.

In the 1980s-1990s Michelin introduced the first "run-flat" tyre allowing vehicles to continue driving even when the tyre was completely deflated.

Today, Michelin is one of the largest tyre manufacturers in the world, with operations in over 170 countries. The company continues to innovate and develop new technologies to improve tyre performance, safety, and sustainability.
