"I have now used this garage on two separate occasions, and unfortunately, although the actual workmanship has been good, the overall experience has left me disappointed. Tyres – last year I ordered two new tyres from the garage. Unfortunately, when the car was returned to me, they had replaced two almost-new tyres rather than the two worn tyres that needed replacing. I returned to the garage and the matter was rectified, only to subsequently discover that two tyres of a slightly inferior brand had been fitted rather than the brand I had originally ordered. This meant a third visit was necessary before the correct tyres were finally fitted. To be fair, the owner was very pleasant and took the time to speak with me at length about what had happened. The matter was eventually resolved and, as I recall, I ultimately ended up with four new tyres, so I was not financially disadvantaged by the mistake. Nevertheless, having to make three visits for what should have been a straightforward two-tyre replacement was frustrating. Service and MOT – this year Despite the tyre experience, I decided to give the garage another chance and booked my service and MOT. The actual work was done well and the car passed its MOT without any issue, so I have absolutely no complaint about the quality of the work itself. My issue is with the pricing and, specifically, how the price was communicated. I phoned several weeks beforehand and was quoted £195 for the service and £45 for the MOT. When I dropped the car off, I specifically checked the service price again and was told £195. The £195 figure was also written in the diary beside my details. When I collected the car, however, the final bill was £282.48, with VAT having been added to the service and other charges. I contacted the garage afterwards because I genuinely did not recall being told that the £195 figure was exclusive of VAT. The garage has since confirmed that they believe VAT was mentioned during the original telephone conversation and that this was recorded in their diary. I cannot say with absolute certainty that it was not mentioned, so I have accepted their explanation. However, as a customer, I still feel that this could have been made much clearer. When I phone a garage specifically to ask how much a service will cost, the figure I am given is obviously an important factor in deciding whether to use that garage. If the quoted £195 is actually £234 once VAT is added, that is a significant difference, particularly when comparing prices with other garages. I also found the additional charges on top of the service price — including waste disposal and a sump plug washer — disappointing when I had understood the £195 figure to be the price of the service. Overall I want to be fair because the staff, including the owner, have always been pleasant and the actual mechanical work has been carried out properly. The MOT passed without issue and I have no criticism of the standard of the work. However, I have now had two separate experiences where something that should have been straightforward has resulted in additional confusion and inconvenience: the tyre issue required three visits to finally get right, and the service price was not as I understood it when I agreed to the work. I am therefore leaving three stars. This is not a reflection of the quality of the mechanical work, which was good, but of the overall customer experience and the lack of clarity I have experienced. Had the pricing been made completely clear from the outset and the tyre order been handled correctly first time, my experience would have been very different."
